Castle Rock, Colorado is the county seat of Douglas County. This growing area was first a community of prospectors and quarry workers until some land was donated in 1874 and Castle Rock became a town. In a year's time, a newly built train depot brought the Denver and Rio Grande Railway to the community. Supplies for ranchers and the rhyolite quarries came in, and rhyolite and cheese from the dairy farms shipped out. Incorporated in 1881, this town of 56,000 was named for the butte near the center of town that looks like a castle tower.
Located in central Colorado at the junction of Interstate 25 and State Highway 86, Castle Rock is surrounded by amazing natural beauty and offers a wide variety of outdoor adventures. Hikers and rock climbers will find plenty to challenge them with recreation areas like Castlewood Canyon State Park and Pike National Forest with their substantial trail systems. An outdoor amphitheater was recently updated in the Philip S. Miller Park, and for those daring enough, the Rock Zip Line Tours have a 10-line course. For the golf lovers, there are eight courses in the area and baseball and softball lovers won't be disappointed as the area has plenty of fields for them as well. If outdoor activities aren't your cup of tea, there are over 100 stores in The Outlets at Castle Rock. Shoppers will also be excited about the new shopping center, The Promenade at Castle Rock, being built in town. It will bring a variety of stores and restaurants to choose from.
