Manitou Springs, Colorado is a home-ruled municipality in El Paso County. With a population of approximately 5,211 is lies within 3.12 square miles. This historic town was incorporated in 1876. It is located approximately 7 miles northwest of Colorado Springs. Native tribes considered the natural mineral springs that run throughout Manitou Springs as sacred, considering the bubbles in the water as "the breath of the Great Spirit ‘Manitou'". The waters were discovered by westerners in 1868, who then set out to make Manitou Springs a resort area with a focus on the mineral springs. In the 1890s, the area was recognized as a health resort because of the clean mountain air and mineral springs. Many health professionals, tourists, and celebrities were drawn to the healing waters. Patterns of tourism continued to change, causing the town to struggle. However, things began to turn around and in the 1980s, the town was made a National Historic District.
With the creation of the Mineral Springs Foundation in 1987, this beautiful historic community is once again host to visitors who come to personally experience the eight naturally occurring mineral springs that have been restored or developed by the Foundation. You will find options to drink the water from the springs, or soak in them, to benefit your health and spirit. There are plenty of other things of interest in Manitou Springs. The Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway can be ridden to the top of Pikes Peak. If you'd rather descend, the Cave of the Winds is a delightful place full of color. The Miramont Castle and the Cliff Dwellings Museums are excellent avenues to learn the history of this historic area. The Ghost Town Museum and the Manitou Springs Heritage Center are also wonderful ways to look back and experience an 1800s western town. And, if the beautiful country and the exciting history are not enough, then the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, and the North Pole & Santa's Workshop are well worth the time to visit.
